Do you tip a mobile detailer?
Short answer: a tip is never expected and never required at Flower City Shine. Your quoted price is the full price of the service, and nothing about how your vehicle is treated depends on whether you tip. That said, this is one of the most common questions new customers ask, so here is a straight answer.
Is tipping normal in auto detailing?
Detailing sits in the same general category as other in-home service work — think house cleaning or lawn care. Tipping is a common courtesy in those trades, but it is genuinely optional, and plenty of customers do not tip at all. Nobody keeps score.
One thing worth knowing: with an owner-operated business, the person doing the work is the person setting the price. Unlike a large shop where a technician earns an hourly wage regardless of the ticket, the quote already reflects what the work is worth. So a tip is a genuine extra, not a way of topping up an underpaid worker.
If you do want to tip
Customers who choose to tip commonly land somewhere in the 10–20% range, or simply round the total up to the next convenient number. For a job that ran long — heavy pet hair, a bad salt winter, a vehicle in much worse shape than expected — some people add a bit more. Cash is easiest, and a tip can also be added when paying the remaining balance.
Honestly, a Google review and a referral to a neighbor are worth more to a local business than a tip. Both are free.
What to expect on the day
Mobile detailing means the work happens where your vehicle already is. We arrive self-contained — we bring our own water and power, so you do not need to provide a hose or an outlet. What we do need is a safe, legal place to park with enough room to work all the way around the vehicle.
You do not have to stand outside the whole time. It does help to be around at the start so you can point out any areas you care about, and at the end for the final walkaround, where we look over the finished result together before wrapping up.
Expect some noise. Vacuums, extractors, and polishers are not quiet, which is worth knowing if you have a nap schedule or a work call to protect.
Driveway and vehicle checklist
- Clear a parking spot with room to open every door and walk around the vehicle.
- Remove valuables, cash, documents, and anything you would not want handled.
- Take out car seats if you want the area underneath them cleaned.
- Clear obvious trash and loose personal items so the time goes toward actual detailing.
- Mention known issues up front — loose trim, failing clear coat, wraps, decals, or existing damage.
- Plan to keep pets and small children away from the work area while tools are running.
How pricing actually works here
Every service starts as a quote request rather than an instant booking. You send your vehicle details and a few photos, we review the actual condition, and then you get a finalized quote. That way the number you see is based on your vehicle, not a generic average.
When a deposit is required, 25% secures the appointment once you accept the quote, and the remaining balance is due after the final walkaround. If the condition on site turns out to be materially different from what was described, we stop and talk it through before doing extra work — no surprise line items.
